Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
đ Application Requirements & Materials
1. When will the scholarship application be available?
The scholarship application will be available for download at the end of December. We encourage students to review the application early and start preparing their materials so theyâre ready to submit by the March 31 deadline.
2. Can I submit parts of my application separately if some materials aren’t ready?
Unfortunately, no. All application materials must be submitted together by the deadline, including your application, transcript, and letters of recommendation. This helps ensure your application is reviewed fairly and completely.
3. My school is not allowed to share letters of recommendation with students. Can my teacher or counselor submit their recommendations directly to the Foundation?
All materials must be submitted together as one complete package. Many students in this situation ask their school to submit the full scholarship packet on their behalf, which has worked well in past years.
4. Do I need to provide an official transcript?
Noâan unofficial transcript is perfectly fine.
5. Can I provide additional materials, such as a résumé, biography, or other documents?
Yes, youâre welcome to include additional materials. Please note that these are optional and do not replace the required itemsâyour application form, transcript, and letters of recommendation are still needed for your application to be complete.
6. Can I edit my application after submitting it?
Once an application is submitted, it cannot be edited or changed. However, if you realize something needs to be corrected, you are welcome to submit a new, complete application packet as long as it is received before the deadline.
đ« Eligibility & Academic Questions
7. The application asks about specific racial and ethnic groups. If my background isnât listed, am I still eligible?
The Route to STEM Scholarships are intended for students from groups that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math relative to their percentage of the U.S. population. While we highlight the most commonly recognized groups such as Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and Native American students, this list is not exhaustive. If your racial or ethnic background meets this definition of underrepresentation in STEM, you are eligible to apply.
8. What if my intended major doesnât seem like a traditional STEM field?
To be eligible, your major must fall within Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics. If your major is borderline or overlaps with STEM, the scholarship committee will evaluate it during the holistic review process to determine how it fits within our mission.
9. Can homeschooled students apply?
Yes! Homeschooled students are welcome to apply. Please provide equivalent documents such as transcripts or academic summaries, along with recommendation letters from instructors, tutors, or program leaders who can speak to your academic work.
10. Can I submit my application if I have not decided which school I will attend?
Yes! If youâre still deciding, feel free to list multiple schools on your application. This helps ensure your application is placed in the right pool and keeps your options open if youâre selected.
11. What if I am selected but decide to attend a different school than the one listed on my application?
Thatâs okay, as long as the school you choose meets the scholarship requirements. The only exception is the Route to FAMU STEM Scholarship, which is limited to students attending Florida A&M University.
12. What if I am selected but decide not to attend college this fall?
Scholarship funds can only be issued once we receive proof of enrollment. If you decide not to attend college, the award will be forfeited, but youâre welcome to apply again in the future if eligibility allows.
đŹ Application Review & Timeline
13. Will the Foundation let me know if my application is incomplete?
The Foundation isnât able to notify students about missing materials. Incomplete applications cannot be reviewed, so we encourage you to double-check your packet before submitting to give yourself the best chance for consideration.
14. When will scholarship winners be notified?
Notifications are typically sent in early to mid-May, once the selection process is complete. If selected, youâll also receive instructions on how to submit your photograph and proof of enrollment.
đ° Scholarship Funds & Usage
15. How will scholarship funds be issued?
Scholarship funds are typically issued directly to the student unless otherwise requested. If the student prefers, funds can be sent directly to their college or university. In some cases, specific sponsor requirements may apply.
16. Can the scholarship be used for housing, books, or other expenses?
Yes. Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, books, fees, housing, or other educational expenses that support your academic success.
